A Legacy of the Land

Mt. Folly Farm has weathered wars, depressions, and changing climates. Here is our story.

Laura Freeman

Founder & Farmer

Mt. Folly Farm is not just a business; it's a living piece of Kentucky history. Located in the rolling hills of Clark County, the land has been farmed since the late 1700s.

The Early Years

The original homestead was built using limestone quarried right from the creek beds. It survived the Civil War and the transition from pioneer subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.

The Tobacco Era

For much of the 20th century, like most of Kentucky, "Burley Tobacco was King." It was the cash crop that built the barns and sent kids to college. Laura's grandfather was a tobacco farmer, continuing a tradition that defined the region.

The Return of Laura Freeman

After a successful career building Laura's Lean Beef (revolutionizing the meat industry by proving you could raise cattle without antibiotics or growth hormones), Laura Freeman returned to the family farm with a new vision.

The tobacco economy was fading. The soil needed healing.

In 2015, she revived the farm's hemp heritage, becoming one of the first to legally grow the crop under the Pilot Program. Today, Mt. Folly is a model for specific regenerative practices, proving that you can heal the land while running a profitable business.
